PSR Positions

To close the achievement gap, we need to start early and close the "readiness gap". We need a reliable community indicator of children's skills as they enter kindergarten. Elementary schools should institutionalize the collection and analysis of children's skills at kindergarten entry using standardized, observation-based assessment tools that align with California's Early Learning Foundations. We should build community capacity for universal developmental screening and early intervention systems that can support and guide children's developmental and academic trajectories.

All children deserve high quality early learning experiences. We need a Quality Rating and Improvement System for childcare and preschools that helps providers improve and parents to make informed choices.

Parents need to understand how they can help their children. We need to provide targeted resources to parents in the community to help them understand practical approaches to helping their children become successful students.

Our early learning systems need to be more integrated and aligned -- for children birth through 3rd grade.
